Immediate Action if a pipe or tank freezes

1) Turn off the water at the main stop valve.
2) If there is a stopcock fitted on the system side of the header tank (to stop water leaving the tank) this should also be turned off. Do this even if you only suspect your pipes are frozen, as they could also have burst. By turning off the water you will reduce the amount of water which can escape and therefore minimise damage to your home.
3) Before you start to thaw the system do what you can to protect or remove anything which might be damaged by the thawing water running from the burst.
4) Thaw the pipe using a hairdryer or hot water bottle – DO NOT USE A BLOW LAMP OR HEAT GUN.
5) Open the tap closest to the frozen part of the pipe.
6) Begin thawing the pipe from the tap side of the frozen area by heating it gently and work back towards the header tank.

Leak Defence System

The “Leak Defense System” manufactured by Sentinel Hydrosolutions. It consists of an automatic control valve that is installed in your water main and connected to an electronic control module in your home. This system electronically monitors water flow through the main line. If there is a slow, continuous flow for an extended period of time, or if there is a sudden, major flow all at once, the system automatically turns off the water supply to your home.

A £30m call-out fee for toughest plumbing job in the universe

The most expensive plumbing call-out in history. Each launch of the Space Shuttle costs about £30 million, and last night, as the Discovery docked with the International Space Station, it carried one vital part – a replacement pump for the orbital outpost’s toilet.

The shuttle Discovery floated into the station with these words: “Someone call a plumber?”

“Yeah, we got it,” the shuttle commander, Mark Kelly, assured station flight engineer Garrett Reisman as the two greeted each other in orbit. Read on…..

Conservatives prioritise plumbing

The Conservative Party have put plumbing at the top of the agenda by promising an additional 100,000 apprenticeships, some of which will be in the trade.

David Cameron has launched the green paper plans, which would also see plumbers working with other small businesses such as electricians when providing the training schemes.

As an incentive, plumbers will be offered a £2,000 bonus for each new recruit who completes the programme. Read more……

Plumbers ‘could face checks’ to work in schools

PLUMBERS AND ELECTRICIANS WORKING in schools could face new background checks under a controversial overhaul of the country’s disclosure system.

Government officials are trying to figure out how to implement legislation brought in last year, with volunteer and charity groups saying they need at least four years to get everyone processed. The government has put aside £4.75 million for a new Central Barring Unit, but some estimates warn it could cost £20m. More Info…..
